All You Have to Do — A Song to Sing in Heaven — Mariposa Bound — Blessing

ALL YOU HAVE TO DO …

All you have to do is open your ears

There’s a secret tale to tell

In the mathematical sequence

Spiraling in a nautical shell

If you hold it to your ear

You won’t hear the ocean’s noise

Just an endless echoing

Of nature’s symphonic joy

It's the way the drops of dew

Reflect the world in perfect little spheres

And how each man can be your brother
When you see him through his tears

All you have to do is open your mind
Our dreams are much the same
You may follow an Ancient Architect
Some dare not even name
With so many ways to the peak
Is there just one path that’s true?
You don’t need a telescope
To improve the breathtaking view

It's the way the drops of dew

Reflect the world in perfect little spheres
And how each man can be your brother
When you see him through his tears
All you have to do is open your eyes
To that higher point of view
And consider all creation
Was it fashioned just for you?
Step away from the canvas
A masterpiece will unfold
As it flies off into the sunset
A raven’s wings shine with gold

It's the way the drops of dew

Reflect the world in perfect little spheres
And how each man can be your brother
When you see him through his tears

I had died and gone to heaven in a dream I had one night
And everyone I ever loved was there
In a circle with the stars there was only one guitar
So we had to pass it around and try to share
I’m waiting in the wings wondering what song to sing
Who among us has not rehearsed for an Eternity?
Would creation not be blessed if I offered a request?
Should I dare to ask God to name His favorite melody?

God must have hid chagrin hearing “Dust in the Wind”
And “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” had us floored
Ringo Star kept the beat rolling thunder beneath his feet
“Imagine” John after George sang “My Sweet Lord”
Hank Williams beamed so bright with his, “I Saw the Light”
“Tears in Heaven” nearly blew us all away
“Stairway to Heaven” was so fine; “Hallelujah quite divine —
“Am I too late I heard Sir Paul sang “Yesterday?”

Someone in the wings said, “Let’s hear one from the King”
Michael Jackson and Elvis both jumped to their feet
“Since I’m the King of Kings I command you both to sing”
Their duet on “How Great Thou Art” could not be beat
“How about one from the Queen?” Up stood seventeen!
At last Madonna offered a slice of “American Pie”…
So God asked Madonna why she chose to sing that song
Buddy Holly interjected, “Up here the music never dies.”

I used to go the New Jersey Folk Project's Evening of Song where folksingers would gather in someone's home in a big circle waiting their turn to sing a song. If it was your turn you had the option of requesting anyone to sing a song in your place. Well I dreamed there was a song circle in Heaven and was wondering, "Should I sing one of my songs or ask God to sing a song." All the great stars would secretly request God to sing one of their songs, so asking that of might put our Heavenly Parent on the spot.

The tune I appropriated for this was the Wreck of the Old Ninety Seven.

MARIPOSA BOUND

I took a ferry to Toronto Islands
Around the stern there was a jug band
That played ragtime all across the harbor
As ducklings swam in the steel grey water
I can’t begin to tell you the happiness I found
It was such a mellow day to be mariposa Bound

By the swimming area some people gathered round
Some kids in a new group with traditional sound
They said they’d never met before the morning came
I believed them, but they were good just the same
I can’t begin to tell you the happiness I found
It was such a mellow day to be mariposa Bound

Visited areas where arts and crafts were displayed
Met some old friends and some new ones were made
Walked around a field where some Frisbees flew
Past gospel singers and workshops for the blues
I can’t begin to tell you the happiness I found
It was such a mellow day to be mariposa Bound

I met girl in a green velvet dress
Her long blonde hair in a wistful sort of mess
She was blowing bubbles to get my attention
I digress—But I just had to mention
I can’t begin to tell you the happiness I found
It was such a mellow day to be mariposa Bound

At last evening came with a sunset so fine
And a calm harbor reflected Toronto skyline
The streets and subways filled with a happy sound
It was such a mellow day to be Mariposa Bound
I can’t begin to tell you the happiness I found
It was such a mellow day to be Mariposa Bound

BLESSING

God bless the universe
And the planets every one
Bless the creatures on the rocks
Taking in the sun
Bless the circles we travel round
And the squares where we may rest
Bless the birds that grace the sky
And fill each empty nest

God bless this city of bright lights
Bring the Hermit Kingdom sun
Strawberries can grow in the winter
There is enough for everyone
Give us the strength to dance and laugh
Upon the mountain peaks
And let there be kindness in every word
That we may choose to speak

God Bless the man without a home
May he have enough to eat
Who among us have tears enough
To wash his dirty feet
God bless the weak and helpless
Caught up in the fray
May the floods of indifference
Never wash us all away

God bless the one who opens our hearts
To plant the seeds of truth
May they grow to be a tree
That we climbed in our youth
The war is never over
Until meadows are free of mines
The darker the clouds behind it
The brighter the rainbow shines

Bless our brothers and sisters
Our mothers and fathers too
And guide the errant elders
When they know not what they do
God bless us on the journey
To that blessed world above
It is merely a reflection
Of all we have come to love

MIRRORS OF FOREVER
BmIf you would pick a trilliumG/A

It wouldn’t flower for seven years
BmEven though you’d cry itG/A
With a mountain of tearsD
BmIf you took those tears to beG
GThe mirror of a lakeD
F#mIt would just take one stoneEm
A DTo make the mirror break

If you took the shattered mirror

To be ripples that never break
You’d never see the mountain
That’s reflected in the lake
If love could move a mountain
And by that the love prove
Eyes would be blurry fountains
Through which the mountains move

A mountain is much like our love

When it gives itself to the seaI
t’s only when you lose yourself
That you can hope to be free
Water falls with such a force
The stream carves out a groove
The sweeter song is at the source
Where stones begin to move
